When it comes to acts of kindness, I think we sometimes overlook the impact of small everyday gestures. It can be bigger than you think. I witnessed this first hand a few days ago. I had the opportunity to attend an event at a local convalescent home. As I looked around the room, I noticed a man sitting by himself in his wheelchair. He had a look on his face that said, “don’t bother me.” As the other residents chatted with each other, this man sat watching. After some time had passed a petite lady sitting behind this gentleman got out of her seat and went over behind him. I was curious to see what would happen next. Noticing that his collar was turned in, she proceeded to straighten it out and give his back a friendly pat. Would he grouse at the woman? Not at all; as he turned around his face lit up with sheer pleasure. I hope I never forget the look of joy on this man’s face and all because of a simple gesture of caring and kindness! As it turned out, when I returned home, my quiet cul-de-sac was crowded with emergency vehicles and police. There had been an untimely death right next door. Watching the proceedings made me feel anxious and sad. Fortunately, I was able to recall the image of that kind moment at the nursing home and the man’s gleeful smile. That one gesture had a ripple effect – who knew? I hope I won’t hesitate the next time an opportunity presents itself, no matter how small, to be kind to someone.
